Palm trees, even short ones, have extensive root systems and will need careful removal. For trees that were removed because of disease or damage, you always need to remove the stump and root system to make sure the soil structure isn’t compromised for future planting.

The roots can lift sidewalks, create trip hazards, and even outcompete other plants for soil nutrients, killing off your existing plants.

As tropical species, palm trees have hundreds of thin, hair-like roots that only expand in length and not in size like other trees. This can make removing a stump difficult, but Tallow Tree Services is here to provide a full guide to safe and permanent palm tree stump removal.

There are four trusted methods:

1. Removing the palm tree stump by hand

The most cost-effective (yet time-consuming) way is to remove the stump by digging up the roots and stump yourself.

Smaller palms with shallow root systems are much easier and will usually only require a shovel and a pick. For bigger trees and more complex root systems, you may need an electric shovel. (Although on some occasions, very large palm stumps can be impossible to remove even with an electric shovel.)

Start by slicing around the base of the stump to cut off surface roots. As you dig further down, level the stump out of the ground with the shovel or a crowbar. To retain as much of the root system as you can, moisten the soil before digging.

2. Using tree stump grinders to remove palm tree stumps

A quick and effective solution is a stump grinder. These remove the stump and can prevent trees from resprouting. They can be hired from a major hardware store and operate a bit like a lawnmower, pushed from behind.

If your palm tree was not cut close to the ground, you may need to recut it for the grinder to work. You will also still have to remove the roots manually after grinding.

3. Rotting the palm tree stump with chemicals

You can rot the stump with commercial rotting aids or nitrogen-based fertilizer. Drill some holes in the stump and apply the rotting aid.

Stump killer chemicals are usually toxic and can be harmful to your, your garden, and your family. Always wear protective gear and ensure pets and children cannot get to the stump during this method. You will still have to wait several months before it has rotted.

4. Rotting the palm tree stump naturally

Alternatively, you can organically speed up the rotting process by covering the stump with a natural source of nitrogen. This will speed along the decay process.

Nitrogen-rich materials are readily available and can be easily recycled. Coffee grounds, grass clippings, chicken and other manure, and bone meal can all be applied. After several months, check on the decomposition. If it has rotted down, you can remove the wood and level the area.

Guide To Pruning Fruit Trees: Lemon, Apple, Avocado And More

There are many opinions on the right way to prune your fruit trees , but there are some simple guidelines that can get you started on the right foot.

First and foremost, completing this job in winter is ideal, as the foliage is sparser, which makes it easier for better visibility. Use what’s known as the three Ds of pruning.

Seek out and trim off any wood that is:

Dead
Damaged
Diseased

This will allow the tree to direct nutrients toward healthy, productive growth.

When deciding where to cut, seek out what’s known as the ‘branch collar’, which is the section where the branch connects to the tree’s trunk and cut just above it.

Trim any branches growing toward the trunk of the tree to promote air circulation. Cut any competing branches, as these can create hollows that gather water, resulting in rot.

How To Kill Tree Roots After A Tree Removal

We don’t want to be the bearers of bad news, but removing a tree trunk does not immediately get rid of its roots. Tree roots can become a major nuisance if they continue growing after you’ve removed the tree, from forcing toward and into sewer systems to cracking the foundation of your house and damaging your driveway.

Did you know that tree roots can spread up to 3 times the radius of their canopy? Maybe even more in the right conditions? So, if you want to know more about tree root killer products, both natural and chemical, this guide is perfect for you.

Natural vs chemical products

Tree root killers use chemicals like copper sulphate and a herbicide called dichlobenil to help empty sewer lines and drainpipes of tree roots. The downside to using chemicals is that they are toxic, so natural root killer products like a mixture of baking soda, vinegar, salt, and boiling water can be flushed inside the lowest toilet in your house. Natural products usually take longer for the tree roots to get washed away, so you’ll have to repeat this a few times for it to work.

Using bleach to kill tree roots

Yes, you can kill tree roots with bleach. First, use a drill to cut into the tree roots that you don’t want. Then, use a paintbrush to spread bleach over the holes on the roots.

Roundup concentrate will definitely kill your tree roots. It contains the active ingredient glyphosate, which is toxic to humans, so do make sure you’re extremely safe. You’ll need to use a paintbrush to spread the Roundup solution over the root area. Another method is to drill holes and then brush Roundup into the root you want to kill. Remember to immediately clean your tools using hot water after they’ve been exposed to the Roundup mixture. The main downside of using Roundup is that it will prevent plant life from growing in that area.

It’s sad when you have to consider removing a tree. Trees are wonders of Mother Nature and are often beautiful features in your garden. Sadly, like any living thing they age and deteriorate. Ancient, damaged or diseased trees can pose risks to people and property and it becomes necessary to find an arborist to undertake tree removal in Byron Bay . Check the trunk

The trunk’s condition provides a good picture of the structural integrity of your tree. If there are cavities, cracks, bulges or wounds, these are indications the tree is not in a happy state.
